Are Chia Pet seeds edible?
While the seeds and sprouts are processed for optimal growth and are not handled to food-grade standards, if consumed accidentally, they are not harmful. We recommend that both people and pets refrain from eating them. However, the Chia Cat Grass Planter is specifically designed for pets to consume.
Why aren’t the Chia seeds sticking or are sliding off?
Here are some common causes:
- Water inside the planter: The planter should be dry when applying the seeds. Wait 2 days before adding water.
- Too much water in the seed mixture: Use 1/8 cup of water for 2 teaspoons of seeds.
- Not mixed long enough: Ensure the seed mixture reaches a jam-like consistency.
- Seeds spread too thick: Apply a thin, even layer of seeds.
If you need more seeds, contact officialchia@outlook.com.
Why are the Chia seeds sliding off when I fill the planter with water?
This typically means the seeds were applied too thickly. Apply a thin layer and avoid clumping. The drip tray should collect only a small amount of water, not overflow within 24 hours. If excessive water is emitting, reach out to officialchia@outlook.com.
Where can I buy more Chia seeds?
You can purchase additional seeds on Amazon.com. Edible Chia seeds may work but test them on a sponge first as they might not grow as well.
Will the Chia seeds still grow after their expiration date?
Chia seeds can last up to 5 years if stored properly. Test the seeds by spreading them on a damp sponge, they should sprout in 3-4 days. Contact officialchia@outlook.com if you need assistance.
Growing Issues FAQ
Why didn’t my Chia Pet grow?
Common growth issues:
- Temperature too cold: Use a loose plastic bag for a greenhouse effect.
- Not enough water: Water daily and empty the drip tray.
- Seeds applied too thick: Apply a thin, even layer.
- Poor air/light: Place near a window or use a fan.
To refresh the growth: Clean with a mild bleach solution (soak for 30 minutes), rinse, and dry completely.
Why does my Chia Pet look strange or splotchy?
Limited light can cause uneven growth. Place your Chia Pet in full sunlight after sprouting. Clumped seeds may not sprout properly. Chia Pets generally reach peak growth in 3-4 weeks. When the growth becomes leggy, it’s time to refresh.
How do I replant my Chia Pet?
- Clean off growth.
- Soak the planter in a water and bleach solution (1/2 tsp bleach) for 30 minutes.
- Rinse thoroughly and dry completely before replanting.
Planters can be reused indefinitely.
Why is my Chia Pet only growing on the bottom?
This happens if the top isn’t getting enough water. Make sure to:
- Fill with fresh water daily.
- Empty the drip tray.
- Mist the seeds if needed.
- Use a loose plastic bag at night for the greenhouse effect.
Why is my Chia Pet growing mold and smells bad?
Mold and odor are caused by high humidity, darkness, excess moisture, or stagnant air. To fix this:
- Place the Chia Pet near a window or use a fan for airflow.
- Do not reuse drip tray water.
- Clean with a bleach solution if needed.
